I know Leo would be proud that the guitar he designed in the early 1950s not only still exists, but in a form that is nearly untouched, and just as relevant as it was when the first Teles rolled off the production line. Try that with other modern products of the era. Are there ’50s cars or television sets that are as important, practical, and unchanged as they were 60 years ago? I’m not sure I can think of any.

There’s a not-so-famous CBS-era Fender magazine ad that features Leo Fender. The headline simply reads “This Man Started a Revolution,” featuring a photo of a grumpy-looking Leo in a flannel shirt. I can guess CBS created this ad not so much to honor the company’s founder, but to draw a link back to Fender’s glory days, amid public backlash about quality and design. But that hardly matters. The sentiment is there for those of us who love the brand.

I was lucky enough to work for Fender Musical Instruments in the early to mid 2000s. This ad hung in my office at Fender’s Scottsdale corporate headquarters. As far as I knew, it was the only image of Leo in that building (not that I ever asked, but I’m sure it was for legal reasons rather than a desire to bury the past).

A few of us in the office had a saying. WWLD: What Would Leo Do? Whenever I had to make a major product decision, I would glance up that this ad, trying to get into the head of a man who’d been dead for 15 years, and gone from the company for nearly 40. I’m sure I didn’t always get it right, but Leo always helped guide me in the right direction.

I think anyone building musical instruments (or anything else, for that matter), should steal that phrase. What Would Leo Do? If you’re just starting out, don’t compromise your quality and innovation. Retailers might pressure you to lower your standards to hit a price point, but there will always be someone cheaper. Stand your ground and no one will be able to build a better product than you.

If you work for an established company that has lost its way, think back to the ideals that made your brand great. You might have to slightly modify the mantra (What Would Orville Do?).

This frame now hangs in my home studio, and I don’t look at it as much as I used to. I suspect though, that I’ll never take it down. I also suspect this won’t be the last major anniversary of the Fender Telecaster.

So, if he were alive on the 60th anniversary of the Fender Telecaster, what would Leo do? Probably shake a few hands and head back to the workshop to develop the next great guitar.

After a few years of speculation, Fender has just announced the release of a signature Stratocaster for legendary MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer.

What’s it all about? Judging by the part number, it looks like the Wayne Kramer Signature Strat is built in Fender’s Ensenada, Mexico factory. It’s much more than a Mexican Strat, though, as the $1,299.99 MSRP price tag will attest.

Of course, you get the red, white and blue U.S. flag finish that the MC5 co-founder rocked back in the ‘60s, with a red-and-white striped body and white-stars-on-blue-background pickguard and headstock.

“Every band needs its own identity,” Kramer says of his homemade design. “When I founded the MC5 and we started to play out, I wanted to develop a look. I was a big fan of Pete Townshend, and I noticed that Pete had a sport coat made out of the Union Jack motif–the British flag–and I thought, ‘What a great idea, but I’m American.’ I figured my motif could be the American flag, the stars and stripes, and so I decided to paint my guitar in that color scheme to advertise my patriotism and total opposition to the direction the country was going in 1968.”

And under the hood? The Fender Wayne Kramer Signature Stratocaster includes a roaring Seymour Duncan ’59 humbucking middle pickup and a commemorative neck plate engraved with “This Tool Kills Hate.” Other features include an alder body, lacquer body finish, maple neck with C shape and large ’70s-style headstock, 21-fret rosewood fingerboard with 7.25” radius and vintage-style frets, vintage-style single-coil Stratocaster neck and bridge pickups, American Vintage hard-tail string-through-body bridge, Fender/Schaller vintage-style “F” tuners and chrome hardware. The guitar also includes a deluxe Fender gig bag.

I didn’t write the above paragraph, but it got me pumped to see this film, so I found no reason to rewrite a summary of the movie. If you’re into rock ‘n’ roll movies or documentaries, I highly suggest you check this out. Bill Mendello, CEO of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, had announced his retirement about a week ago. Certainly big news, but we’d all been waiting for his replacement to be announced to the public. Today, Fender revealed that Larry Thomas, a long-time Guitar Center employee and Chairman & CEO from 1996-2004, will take over the reigns of one of the most-respected guitar companies in the world.

In a released statement, this is what Mendello had to say about the changing of the guard: “I am delighted to be able to pass the leadership of FMIC into the very capable hands of Larry Thomas,” said Mendello. “Larry is a widely-respected person with an incredible amount of experience and valuable insight about music companies and music retailers, large and small. He is one of the true legends in the industry and brings the credentials that will help lead FMIC to even greater future success.”

As a former Fender employee, and someone who is not the biggest fan of Guitar Center, I certainly have my opinions about this move (although they may not be what you think). What are yours? Please leave a comment and let me know if you think this is a good or bad move for Fender.

When I was in college, the house my band practiced in was broken into and our PA system and our guitarist’s amp was stolen, but the only thing that’s even been taken from me was a splash cymbal. A bummer, but not a huge setback.

On the Fender Front Row blog, the folks from Scottsdale have posted some tips to help you recover your instrument if it’s even stolen. This is pretty simple stuff: write down the serial number, take pictures, file a police report…but sometimes we forget the basics, so this refresher is nice.

Of course, the most important thing is to be extra careful and make sure your gear is safe from sticky fingers to begin with!

Being a musical instruments website, it took a bit of thinking to find a post topic that bridges the two together. Considering, though, that most of the instruments we play are made from wood, there is an absolute tie-in between the environment and the tools we use to make music.

We can all agree that deforestation is a major problem. I think people have done a great job in the past few years of making small changes in their lives to think environmentally, but when you have to balance the desire to be kind to the earth with buying a product you’re very passionate about, the decision is not always cut and dry.

Let’s take guitars. You’ve been saving up for that new Martin or Taylor acoustic guitar. This is your dream guitar. Maybe you remember the way your father’s Martin D28 felt in your hands, the way the body resonated against your chest, even the way the wood smelled. If you’re going to drop $3,000 on a guitar, you want it to be exactly like that. You are probably not willing to compromise quality for anything else. And why should you?

Of course, the same goes for guitar makers. When people expect the best quality product, they don’t want to compromise the materials they’re using to build it.

We musicians are a picky bunch. We love talking about wood, and the different sounds that different types and qualities of wood will create. We also like exotic woods, from the kinds of trees that people chain themselves around to protect.

So, where is the middle ground?

Believe it or not, Greenpeace has launched the Music Wood Campaign, teaming up with some of the top guitar manufactures, including Martin, Taylor, Fender, Guild, Gibson, Walden, and Yamaha. The goal is to increase the supply of woods traditionally used in the building of guitars that come from trees grown in a sustainable fashion.

For an example check out the Martin D Mahogany 09, made entirely from wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (The FSC was founded by Greenpeace and other organizations in the early 1990s, and has become the gold standard of environmental certification in the forestry industry).

So, when you’re shopping for your next dream guitar, think about where the wood has come from. With a bit of research, you can get the best of both worlds. For more info, check out The Music Wood Coalition.

It seems that they’re really pulling out the stops this year. If you’re not at the show, they’ll be posting videos on their blog all weekend long. You can check out the different sections of the booth, interviews with artists, and live performances.

I want to direct you to this page specifically, featuring Big Tex and the Blazin’ Pintos, a band made up of Fender employees from their Scottsdale headquarters. Back in the day when I worked at Fender, I played drums with Big Tex for a few shows while they were between drummers. They’re a really fun band a really great guys. My moniker during those days was Ol’ Grizz, due to the beard I sported at the time.

They don’t specify which Fender guitar cable you’ll get, but in a photo on the Boss website, it looks like a Fender Premium Platinum Instrument Cable, which runs over $50.

We purchased this amplifier from the family of the original owner last week! The original owner and his wife drove from Palm Springs, CA and purchased it directly from Leo Fender in 1950. Upon returning home with the amp, his wife hand-sewed the black velvet cover that it still has to this day. He used the amp only a number of times with his country-swing band. It was explained that he used it to amplify his Martin D-18 which was fitted for a pickup. He quickly replaced this 1950 Fender Pro with an unknown higher-powered amp. It was at this time that he literally put the amp in the closet, where it remained for almost 50 years! We purchased it directly from the widow and she claims to still have the receipt for the amp, although she was not able to find it before we picked it up
