Chad Beeler knows bass guitar. He’s played the instrument for more than 30 years and has equipped some of the world’s best known bass players while working for Seattle’s venerable Bass Northwest music store. Chad recently opened up shop at BassEFX.com, a website dedicated to the under served bass pedal and bass effects market. If you’re a bass player and want anything more than bass to cable to amp, you need to give this guy a call!

I respect Chad’s opinion on all things bass, so when he told me Spencer Doren’s 3Leaf Audio is one of the next great pedal companies, I took note! Spencer started 3Leaf in 2008 and today, at the ripe old age of 21, is swimming in great reviews of his pedals, which include the PWNZOR Optical Compressor, Proton Envelope Filter, and GR2 Envelope Filter.

Chad and Spencer have joined forces to hook up a lucky GearPipe reader with a 3Leaf Audio GR2 Envelope Filter which, by the way, is an amazing sounding pedal for bass or six string guitar.

Enter to Win a 3Leaf Audio GR2 Envelope Filter

This contest is now closed. Congrats to the winner!

About the 3Leaf Audio GR2 Envelope Filter

The ultimate filter for those who want total control of their sound. With precise control over attack and decay speed, the GR2 can emulate the sounds of both modern and classic envelope filters. It has a wide sensitivity range that works with active and passive instruments. The tone control sets the upper cutoff frequency, making the sound go from bright and lively to dark and swampy with the turn of a knob. The frequency range is tailored for guitar, bass, or whatever else you might want to plug into it. The new clean blend control expands the GR2′s versatility by mixing your clean tone with the filter. The effects loop lets you combine the GR2 with fuzz, octave and any other effects, while still triggering the filter with your clean tone. With the all-new internal lowpass/bandpass, resonance and gain controls, the tonal possibilities are endless. Whatever filter sound you’re after, the GR2 can deliver.

New Features:

Wet/Dry Blend

Internal lowpass/bandpass switch

Internal gain trimpot

Internal high/low resonance switch

Internal true/buffered bypass switch. When in buffered bypass, the effects loop is active while in bypass

Accepts 9-18v DC

Learn More About the Maxon SM9 Super Metal Pedal

Based on the cult-classic Super Metal pedal from the 1980′s, the Maxon SM-9 Pro+ packs sufficient firepower to accurately reproduce all the tonal evolutions of metal music over the past 30 years.

The Maxon SM-9 Pro+ can create an almost limitless variety of high-gain guitar sounds, from classic 70′s Plexi tones through the “scooped midrange” made famous by the 1980’s thrash pioneers, and on to the huge low-end needed for the extended tunings of today’s extreme metal.

The SM-9 Pro+ features Gain, Level, Scoop, and Edge controls. Gain simultaneously boosts the 1 kHz midrange band by up to 20 dB as Gain is increased. Scoop is a mid-band elimination filter that is variable between 200 Hz – 2 kHz. Edge is a hi-cut shelving filter that cuts hi frequencies from 2 kHz to 15 kHz.

The SM-9 Pro+ also features switchable 9 or 18 volt operation, providing sufficient headroom with minimal compression to handle today’s high-output pickups and active electronics.

Whether your a Metalhead looking for that perfect grind, or a working cover player who doesn’t want to lug huge amps around, the Maxon SM-9 Pro+ Super Metal is the perfect tone tool to sharpen your steel.

I’m very excited to announce the launch of our first GearPipe branded product. I’m not talking cyber-stuff here, but a real, physical product that you can hold in your hand: GearPipe guitar picks!

I’m very excited to announce the launch of our first GearPipe branded product. I’m not talking cyber-stuff here, but a real, physical product that you can hold in your hand: GearPipe guitar picks!

Here’s the back story. I used to buy picks for a major guitar manufacturer (who sells a similar looking pick…can you guess?), so I have relationships with many factories. My guitar pick factory was kind enough to let me print a small run of picks with the GearPipe logo, made from the same high-quality celluloid that the other company uses.

So, I hope you’ll consider buying some picks. Plus (and there’s always a plus!), for each dozen picks you buy through the end of May, you’ll be entered once to win 100 picks custom printed with your name or band’s logo. There are a bunch of materials to choose from and all standard thicknesses are available, so I’ll work with the winner to make his or her dream pick!

And why would you want to buy these picks from me? Three reasons.

You get the same great quality picks you already buy, at the same price, but with a “boutique” logo.

You’re supporting a passionate small business instead of a large multi-national corporation. I’m also proud to say these picks were manufactured in the United States.

You have a chance to win 100 of your own custom guitar picks, printed with your name or band’s logo.

Each person who buys a dozen GearPipe guitar picks will be entered to win 100 custom picks. The more GearPipe picks you buy, the more chances you have to win the custom picks. You can either add picks to you bag on the right, or visit the brand new GearPipe Store for more details about our guitar picks.

As always, thank you for your support, I know you’ll enjoy these picks, and good luck!

Yesterday I mentioned Free Pedal Friday at ProGuitarShop. That’s great, but the people at Seattle’s Jet City Music, a boutique guitar pedal & accessories shop, say “Why wait until Friday when you can get a free pedal on Thursday?”

It’s a good point! Jet City just opened their doors in January, and they’ve been generating a lot of buzz with their killer selection of gear, great customer service, and Thursday generosity.

This week, Jet City is giving away a Boss PS-6 Harmonist. This is one of those crazy stompboxes that you kind of have to hear to believe, but here’s the rundown:

The PS6 can add 2 to 3 harmonies to your guitar playing at the touch of a knob that are in key and sound great. If harmonies weren’t enough you can also use the Boss PS6 Harmonist as a Pitch Shifter, a De-tuner, and what Boss calls a S-bend (super bend).

Dial in the correct key and adjust for major or minor playing to add another guitar player to your bands mix and fill out your sound by simply pressing the footswitch. Want a little more control the get a Boss FV500H and use it to accurately manipulate the pitch bending with your feet while you play.

Features:

Four effect modes in one stomp box: Harmony, Pitch Shifter, Detune, and S-BEND (Super Bend)

Easily create two- or three-voice harmonies with selectable key and voicing

High-quality pitch shifting

Three-voice Detune capability

Super Bend provides up to four octaves of extreme pitch bending

Control pitch via expression pedal (optional BOSS FV-500L/H or Roland EV-5)

Standard 9 volt operation

My advice is to enter each week, and check their Facebook page for the winners.

Many of you know the ProGuitarShop gives away a sweet free pedal every Friday. They call it Free Pedal Friday. Today, I’m here to tell the rest of you.

This week, enter to win a SolidGold FX High Octane Overdrive pedal. This is a great sounding OD pedal that sells for $175.

Here’s some info about the SolidGold FX High Octane Overdrive Pedal:

The High Octane’s main focus is clarity, response and versatility. The goal for this pedal was to produce a rich, complex, low to mid gain overdrive in a simple package with lots of output. The tone is smooth and full bodied yet crisp and clear, highly responsive to player dynamics, pick attack and guitar output; as such, it cleans very well up as you reduce your guitar’s volume.

The High Octane’s gain ranges from a natural clean boost to a gritty low to medium gain OD. We have included a 2-way Mode switch providing modern and vintage overdrive characteristics. The modern mode relies on MOSFET technology to provide a natural, crisp, uncompressed breakup and high output. The vintage mode provides extra compression, added saturation and a warmer, more rounded overdrive tone. We have also included a specially tuned Tone control to help dial in just the right tonal balance. If more distortion is required, simply put one of our fine boosters before the High Octane and dial in as much layered, creamy saturation you desire!

The Holy Grail of Overdrives!

Features:

Very responsive and dynamic.

Transparent, well balanced tone response and natural breakup

Low noise operation.

Clean Boost to mid gain overdrive tones

Tons of output on tap!

Entry Deadline: April. 15, 2011 at 9:00 AM PST

Floyd Rose guru Adam Reiver, who has been working on the tremolos of the stars for almost 20 years, is giving one lucky guitarist the rock star treatment, and your last name doesn’t have to be Van Halen, DeMartini, or Lifeson to enter.

Reiver owns FloydUpgrades.com and D-Tuner (makers of the EVH D-Tuna Drop D Tuning System). He’s throwing in killer products from both companies to turn one of your Floyd Rose-equipped guitars into a serious dive-bombing, finger-tapping tone factory.

This giveaway winner will receive:

One FloydUpgrades Big Blocks Brass Sustain Block

One Set of FloydUpgrades Noiseless Springs

One FloydUpgrades Brass Spring Claw

One EVH D-Tuna Drop D Tuning System

So, how does one enter this giveaway?

We’re running this one on Facebook only. The short story is that you have to “like” a few pages, then post on your own Facebook wall. Here’s the step-by-step:

Step #1: Like all three of these Facebook pages (you’ll have to be signed in to your account first).

Step #2: Post the following message on your personal Facebook profile:

I just entered to win a FloydUpgrade kit and EVH D-Tuna from “The Official” FloydUpgrades, “The Official” Edward Van Halen D-TUNA, and Musical Instrument Giveaways. You can enter at http://go.gearpipe.com/gx6Voh

The catch, though, is you’ll have to tag all three Facebook pages in your post. Before typing the names of each page, hit the “@” key, then enter the name of the page. The page name will show on a drop-down menu, and will then become a link in your post.

This is the only way we can keep track of who entered, and you must tag all three to qualify.

Note: For everyone having trouble tagging, make sure you don’t just copy/paste the post and add the “@” sign. The “@” first needs a space after it to work. Type “@” then start typing the page name. Sorry for those having issues!

Step #3: Practice your arpeggios and hope your name is chosen from the virtual hat!

What are the rules?

The deadline to enter this giveaway is April 11th, 2011, at 11:59:59 PM ET.

This giveaway is open worldwide!

You must be 13 years of age or older at the time of your entry.

Can you tell me more about the products?

Sure thing. Here you go!

FloydUpgrades Big Blocks Brass Sustain Block

Tone is selective – period! To the true tone aficionado, tone is almost sacred. Not everybody understands this point but for those of us who do you will know what I am talking about. When a great guitar tone makes the hair on your arm stand up, send a tingle down your spine or (better yet) inspire you to play something that you otherwise wouldn’t have – that puts you in the club of “getting it”!

Odds are, if you are reading this, you are just like me – a tone chaser – a guitar geek who will try anything to get a new sound.

FloydUpgrades Brass Spring Claw

The Brass Tremolo Claw is a tonal monster that replaces the cheap pot metal claw that comes with every tremolo. The signal in your tone chain travels from the string to the saddles to the block to the springs to the CLAW to the claw screw to the body. The weakest link in this chain is the spring claw! Made from the highest grade of bell brass. Use what the pros use!

FloydUpgrades Noiseless Springs

Noiseless Tension Springs use a revolutionary new polymer to eliminate noise through pick-ups. Giving your music a tighter crisper sound. No after noise, echo, or reverb especially on loud volume. Great for studio recording!

Fits Kahler, Floyd Rose and their licensed products. Also fits Fenders.

EVH D-Tuna Drop D Tuning System

The EVH D-Tuna is a unique patented device for the Floyd rose bridge that enables players to drop the E to D and back, in an instant. D-Tuna has been standard equipment on Eddie Van Halen’s personal guitars as well as signature series locking tremolo-equipped guitars since the early 90′s. Since then thousands of D-Tuna’s have been sold all over the world. D-Tuna is proud to be endorsed by many professional players such as Warren DeMartini (RATT), Michael Wilton (Queensryche) and Dave “The Snake” Sabo (Skid Row) just to name a few. Bottom line…It’s simple to use and it works.

GCB95 Crybaby Wah Wah Pedal

When people talk about wah-wah pedals, they’re talking about the Cry Baby Wahs. This is the one that created some of the most timeless sounds in rock. The pedal that would eventually become the Cry Baby was first created in 1966 by engineers at the Thomas Organ Company. This new and expressive effect was an instant hit with players like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, who have contributed to the Cry Baby Wah’s huge popularity to this day. While other effects have come and gone, the Cry Baby Wah just keeps getting better with age.

MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay Pedal

Go from crisp “bathroom” slap echoes to epic, Gilmouresque delays with the MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay. Featuring 600ms of delay time with optional modulation, and a three-knob layout that controls Delay, Mix, and Regen. In addition, there are two internal trim pots that offer user-adjustable width and rate control of the modulation for even more tonal options. All done by a completely analog audio path for authentic rich, warm analog delay—made possible only by old-school analog bucket brigade technology.

Way Huge Green Rhino Overdrive Pedal

The legendary Way Huge Green Rhino has returned! The Mk II has all the gorgeous classic overdrive that you crave but it has evolved to include cool new features that make it even more rhinoceriffic. In addition to the Volume, Tone, and Drive controls, you get a 100Hz EQ knob to cut or boost your low end by 12dB. Your low notes can either shake the ground like a stampede across the savannah or cut through the mix like a charging rhino’s horn. This pachyderm of a pedal also sports a Curve control to fine-tune the corner frequencies of your tone. All this amazing tone shaping makes other overdrives seem boring and one-dimensional by comparison. In front of a clean amp, with the Volume and Drive set at noon, you can go from pristine purity to a punchy, dynamic rhythm tone. Set the Drive low and crank the Volume and add tons of boost to wallop the input of any amp. Turn up the Drive control with the Rhino in front of a distorted channel and hear more gain and sustain than you ever thought your amp was capable of. And no matter how you use it, the Green Rhino Mk II will deliver clean operation, quiet relay-based true-bypass switching, and the rock-solid construction that Way Huge is famous for.

Pedaltrain 2 + Gig Bag

The Pedaltrain 2 is Pedaltrain’s most popular model. This unit will easily hold a wah and a dozen standard sized stomp boxes. The Pedaltrain 2 comes with a tough cordura nylon gig bag with highly protective panels incorporated into the top and bottom of the case to keep those valuable pedals safe.

These revolutionary pedalboards are made of welded aluminum alloy tubing to ensure that every Pedaltrain is as strong and lightweight as possible. There are no moving parts to loosen or wear out. A durable powder coat finish ensures your Pedaltrain will look great and last a lifetime.

Ultimate Guitar and The Music Zoo have teamed up to give away a ’70s Stratocaster from Fender, and a Kustom Defender V50 all-tube 50 watt guitar amp. Put them together, and this package will give one winner some killer vintage tone worth about $2,150.

Here’s some more info about these pieces of gear:

I am a self-professed cable geek. I’ve worked for a few great cable manufacturers in my time, and will always recommend spending a few extra bucks for a high-quality cable, for durability as much as sound.

Thanks to customguitarboutique.com, one of you could score a killer cable without shelling out a dollar. This month, the online retailer is giving away a $50 David Laboga guitar cable.

They are giving you two ways to enter this giveaway. First, you can simply “Like” their Facebook page and post “David Laboga Cables wanted” on their wall. Double your chances of winning by emailing them directly at mailinglist@customguitarboutique.com with “David Laboga Cables wanted” as the subject line.

A bit about David Laboga guitar cables:

It is ideal for all electric instruments such as: electric guitars, bass guitars, elecro-acoustic guitars, electric pianos, keyboards, all instruments connected to all types of amplifiers, effects, etc.

The diameter of this cable is 7 mm. It has a woven spiral wound screen which decreases the microphonics effect and there is a high efficiency of screening . Also, the cable is double protected by a special tube to give it the maximum lifespan. Even though it is heavily protected, it is one of the most flexible cables on the market in it’s class. These combinations provide a cable that doesn’t get tangled up (like others on stage) and they simply don’t break. To longer cables, a velcro system is included to ease and speed up the winding process.

Entry Deadline: February 27, 2011

They are giving away a Hardwire TL-2 Metal Distortion pedal.

More about the Hardwire TL-2 Metal Distortion Pedal:

Unleash raw gain with the TL-2 Metal Distortion. The TL-2 Metal Distortion has two high-gain amp tone circuits at your disposal. Tight Mode gives you a responsive, percussive low end with smooth high frequencies. Loose Mode features a low EQ that best suits detuned guitars and produces a massive amount of low end grind.

Hank at EffectsBay just launched his first giveaway of 2011, sponsored by Fat Tone Guitars. You can win a Jack DeVille Electronics Dark Echo.

Hank says “This is a great sounding echo/delay pedal. It is described to be similar to a space echo, memory man and a echoplex all in one with the ability modulate or ‘sway’ the repeats.” This is an opinion I trust! Head over to Effects Bay and enter this one!

More about the Jack DeVille Electronics Dark Echo Pedal:

What if you could play your guitar in a desolate cave 20,000 leagues under the sea? I pondered this question as I designed the Dark Echo; and when the lab-coat came off, the wet-suit went on and lush echos trailed into oblivion, progressively darkening with every repeat. I dialed the repeat knob to maximum and I was up to my ears in a fluid wash of sound, ebbing and flowing like the tides of the ocean.

The Dark Echo embodies deep, dark delay with a very smooth, thick, and organic texture.

Included are controls for Delay Time, Repeats, Wet Blend, dynamic Sway modulation, and an internal trim-pot for output level.

Entry Deadline: January 21, 2011

For regular GearPipe readers, you know there is no such thing as a regular GearPipe reader, as my post consistency lacks a certain amount of consistency.

But, you probably know that I am extremely dependable when it comes to posting gear giveaways on Facebook and Twitter (and more recently, Tumblr). In fact, I started GearGiveaway365 over a year ago and have only missed a few days (he says as he pats himself on the back).

Not only that, but dozens of people have won gear. My guess is that members of the group have scored over $20,000 in musical instruments.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a bass guitar giveaway here on GearPipe!

Lace Music is giving away a Helix Bolt-on 4-string bass guitar, a very nice bass that retails for $599. The winner will also score a Lace T-shirt and will have a “Winners Bio” featured in the Lace Artist Gallery for a year. Cool!

But wait, there’s more! 8 second prize winners will receive a set of Lace Pickups of their choice. This means guitar or bass pups, single coil or humbucker. The second prize winners will be announced each week through February 21, 2011.

Here’s more info about Lace Helix bass guitars:

The Helix™ Basses, feature a sensuous new body design, incorporating data-system style control knobs, progressive pickups and quality hard woods. The Helix™ offers superior style, and mirrors the advanced technology of the unparalleled Lace® brand pickups.

The Lace Helix™ bass is available in two versions. The “bolt-on” neck, featuring a 34” scale length, maple neck, mahogany body and a single, Alumitone® bass pickup for volume and tone. The premium version has stunning, multi-laminated neck-through construction, mahogany body, dual Alumitone® bass pickups, 3-way selector switches and a master switch for volume and tone. Both Lace Helix™ models are available in black or the transparent red or blue, highlighting the subtleties of the natural wood grain.

The Helix™ bass is equipped with the revolutionary Alumitone® pickup, designed by Jeff Lace. These Alumitones® are a “current driven” design, rather the traditional voltage based pickups, allowing the musician a higher fidelity or “broad-band response” that helps to create a tighter top-end, more mid-range and a huge bottom end. This passive pickup outperforms many active systems, and the sonic output level generally exceeds that of similar preamp equipped basses. With today’s increased environmental concerns, Lace® also wanted to create a lightweight, advanced pickup that doesn’t contribute to pollutants caused by discarded batteries. “By using the Alumitone, ® the need for conventional pickups with a preamp and battery are eliminated, and you lose almost two pounds of weight, without compromising output or performance,” states Jeff Lace.

The Alumitone® soapbar pickups and data knobs are “Made in the U.S.A.” and installation and setup are completed at the Lace® Music factory in Huntington Beach, CA.

The good people at Seymour Duncan have just launched a new giveaway. Five grand prize winners will each score one set of Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Slash pickups personally signed by Slash, plus one signed copy of Slash’s self-titled CD. Fifty second prize winners will receive a Seymour Duncan T-Shirt. Sweet!

More about the Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Slash Pickups:

Like the standard APH-1 Alnico II Pro, this pickup uses an Alnico 2 magnet. However, the Slash model is wound with just enough boosted output to push a stock Les Paul toward the sweet sustain and rude crunch that characterizes Slash’s sound as heard on hundreds of tracks. In addition, it comes with some of the same appointments found on the Seymour Duncan pickups in Slash’s ’86 recording axe, including single-conductor cable, long-legged bottom plate, and wooden spacer. For the true fan, or the player who wants to capture Slash’s recorded tone, this pickup is a critical part of the tone chain. This is same pickup found in the newest Gibson® Slash model Les Paul.

Have you guys heard the buzz about ZT Amplifiers? Their Lunchbox amp has gotten a ton of good press lately, and now they’re creating more excitement with a sweet giveaway. They’re not giving away an amp, though. Rather, one lucky winner will walk away with a Fender American Standard Stratocaster!

Here’s the deal: They really want you to stop into a ZT Amplifiers dealer and test drive one of their amps. If you do, you’ll receive a coupon code that will allow you to enter the giveaway on their website.

But, if you don’t have a ZT dealer near you, or you’re just lazy, you can also check out a short video on their website that touts many of the great bands that are playing ZT. Then, just enter the name of any featured band to enter. Pretty simple!

Imagine seeing bands like Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones long before they became famous. Legendary Rock photographer Robert Knight did just that, and has the photos to prove it. Rock Prophecies explores Robert’s amazing career and follows him on his quest to help the bands of today become the Rock legends of tomorrow, whether promoting Panic at the Disco before anybody has heard of them, or convincing Aussie band Sick Puppies to sell everything and move to the United States. When Robert stumbles upon Tyler Dow Bryant – a 16-year old guitar phenom from Texas – he’s convinced he may have found the next Stevie Ray Vaughan. Robert risks his reputation and career and takes a chance on Tyler. The two then set off on an unbelievable journey to take their own shot at making history.

I didn’t write the above paragraph, but it got me pumped to see this film, so I found no reason to rewrite a summary of the movie. If you’re into rock ‘n’ roll movies or documentaries, I highly suggest you check this out. According to the Rock Prophecies Facebook Page the DVD release date is Sept 14th, and the film will be airing nationally throughout the month of September on PBS. As they say, check your local listings.

BUT, to get you even more excited, the filmmakers are giving away a Fender Road Worn ’60s Stratocaster worth $1,199! If you’re not familiar with this axe, here’s the down low:

The Stratocaster really came into its own in the 1960s, with players coaxing unbelievable sounds from it amid punishing stage shows and grueling tours. Beaten, bruised and even burned, they only got better as the years wore on—looking even cooler and feeling even more comfortable. Fender’s new rosewood-fretboard Road Worn ’60s Strat delivers that aged look and feel—built to look, sound and feel like it’s got more than just a few miles on it, designed with 1960s specs, including a nitrocellulose-lacquer finish, and supercharged with Tex-Mex™ pickups and 6105 frets.

I’m a few weeks overdue in announcing this to the public, but we picked a winner for our Tom Tom Magazine one-year subscription giveaway. Our winner was April Jouse of Chicago, IL.

Although April was chosen in a totally random fashion, I could not have chosen a better winner. Tom Tom is a magazine dedicated to female drummers, and April is a kick-ass female drummer. Perfect! Her band, Squish, has been playing together for a year or so, are all self-taught musicians and just played their first show a few weeks ago.

Check out Squish on MySpace.

I kind of don’t want to share this one. I’d rather keep it for myself!

Acoustic Guitar Magazine is giving away a Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 acoustic guitar & 12 sets of strings. This package is worth $4,200!

About the Martin Performing Artist Series Guitar Giveaway:

Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 guitar, including brown hard-shell case (retail value $3,999) and 12 sets of Martin MSP-4100 SP Phosphor Bronze Light Strings (retail value $201).

This stunning guitar features Martin’s mortise and tenon neck joint, hybrid scalloped bracing, solid East Indian rosewood for back and side material, Sitka spruce soundboard, and ebony headplate, fingerboard, and bridge.

The Performing Artist Series innovations include a faster neck profile with a 1¾-inch nut width, along with a slimmer taper measuring 21/8 inches at the 12th fret, giving the guitar a more comfortable spacing in the first few frets and a faster feel for leadwork as you move up the neck.

This guitar sounds as spectacular as it looks, with newly designed Fishman F1 Aura™ onboard electronics. Articulate, yet powerful, this new Fishman system delivers stunning realism and projection in an easy-to-use onboard preamp system.

Each model in the Performing Artist Series offers its own distinctive acoustic and plugged-in sound for the discerning player. The Grand Performance Cutaway model (GPCPA1) combines the big rich sound of the Dreadnought and the clarity of the Orchestra model into a new sonic signature of its own.

Here's your chance to win a one year subscription to Tom Tom Magazine, the only magazine dedicated to female drummers.

If you listened to the podcast I recorded a few months back with Tom Tom Magazine founder Mindy Abovitz, you know what a cool project this is. While many magazines are struggling to reach readers, Mindy launched Tom Tom with a zeroed in demographic: female drummers. In less that a year they have interviewed and featured such high-profile female drummers as Cindy Blackman, Yuko Araki (Yoko Ono Band), Hannah Blilie (The Gossip), Laura Fares (Sam Sparro), Suphala, and Allison Miller (Brandi Carlile).

She was kind enough to send copies of the magazine’s first three issues, and I can’t tell you how impressed I am. In fact, I have to admit that I fear creasing the pages, as the magazine is so well done it feels like a piece of art in my hands!

In an attempt to get more people turned on to Tom Tom I asked Mindy if she’d put up a subscription as a GearPipe exclusive giveaway. She was kind enough to agree.

Here’s how it works. Tom Tom is a quarterly magazine, meaning four issues per year. They’ve published three, with the fourth coming in September. The winner will get issues #1-3 ASAP, and will receive issue #4 when it’s printed.

To enter, just fill out the form below. This giveaway will run for one week with a deadline of midnight Pacific next Thursday (August 5th).

If you can’t wait for the giveaway and want to subscribe to Tom Tom, you can do it here. Also, Tom Tom is a labor of love for Mindy and her team (meaning there’s no big publisher backing them with cash). The project is being featured on Kickstarter, so if you want to back the cause with a few bucks, there are some very cool products that you’ll get back, plus a warm fuzzy in your tummy. Learn more at Kickstarter.

I have to admit that I cheat a bit when I’m searching for musical instrument giveaways. I have a bunch of Google alerts set up, so when a website launches a giveaway, I’m notified.

Today, up popped a name I recognized: Dolan Geiman. Dolan is not a musician (well, he could be, but not a famous one), but rather a really kick ass artist! I knew the name because I produce the podcast series each year for the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver, and Dolan submitted a very cool video last year (embedded below).

He’s currently got a killer giveaway going on with Fossil, featuring a guitar-themed piece of his artwork. This piece, “Made in the Shade,” is mixed media recycled artwork, and was created with acrylic, silk screen, and found paper collage on recycled wood (48” x 33” x 2”). It’s like hanging a guitar on your wall but way, way cooler. Oh…and it’s valued at $3200!

This is the complete list of items used to make “Made in the Shade:”

1. There are six keys at the top of the guitar. Five of the keys were found in an abandoned post office building in Chicago. The last key was found at a truck stop outside of Denver.

2. The material on the neck of the guitar is a smashed cookie tin from an alleyway in Nashville.

3. The ninth piece of wood on the neck on the guitar came from a house in the French Quarter in New Orleans, post Katrina.

4. Also on the neck of the guitar is a white wooden ruler from abandoned farmhouse near Necedah,Wisconsin.

5. For the flowers, the darker wood is lathe from abandoned houses here in Chicago, and the red wood is from a barn outside of Louisville, Kentucky.

6. The broom handles were acquired from a junkman in Houston,Texas.

7. An old metal conduit came from an abandoned warehouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

8. A hickory stick came from my grandma’s farm in Crimora, Virginia.

9. Directly above the “American” text is a round piece of wood I found among a larger pile of wood bleaching in the sun near the Ohio River banks.

10. The “American” text is hand-silkscreened on old apple crate wood that I found in an abandoned Ohio woodshop.

11. The decorative cream-colored molding came from a piece of furniture I found floating down the Mississippi River.

12. The red ruler is from Michigan.

13. The vintage square ruler originated from an abandoned schoolhouse in Iowa.

14. And the gold molding is from a picture frame I found in an abandoned church in Indiana.

Any of us should be proud to hang this in our home…good luck!

First up, Effects Bay is giving away one of those products that you wish you would have thought of, a StageTrix Pedal Riser. Actually, they’re giving away four of them, plus two 3-packs of Pedal Fasteners. The Pedal Risers simply raise up the second row of effects pedals on your board, giving you easier access to the on/off switch. See? Simple yet genius!

The fastener is simply an industrial strength fastener designed specifically for attaching pedals to pedalboards.

If you think the TC Electronic PolyTune tuner is badass, you’re right. It is. If you don’t feel like dropping $100 on yet another guitar tuner, I can’t blame you.

However, if you’re an oh-so-trendy iPhone owner, TC Electronic wants to reward your coolness. They are offering up free PolyTune iPhone apps to the first 25,000 people who download it. UPDATE – They upped this to 50,000 downloads, but the promo is over. The app is now available for $9.99.

I just downloaded a copy for myself and it looks very cool! You can choose between guitar and bass tuning, with multiple drop tuning settings, 10 Hz calibration, and two different display modes. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, the coolest thing about this tuner is that you can tune all six (or four) strings at once. Just strum and tune!

To take advantage of this offer, you can go to the PolyTune page in the iPhone App Store, or if you want to download it directly to your phone, just search on “polytune.”

Here’s a great pedal giveaway for you effects freaks! Godlyke is giving away two of their newest pedals. The first prize winner will get a Maxon SM-9 Pro+ Super Metal AND ST-9 Pro+ Super Tube pedal. The second prize winner will score their choice of a Maxon SM-9 Super Metal or ST-9 Super Tube pedal.

Well, you may ask, what are these pedals all about? Here’s a rundown:

Maxon ST-9 Pro+ Super Tube
A salute to the rare and highly collectible “Super Tube Screamer” from the 1980′s, the new Maxon ST-9 Pro+ Super Tube takes the basic design elements of that coveted vintage model and brings them into the 21st century.

Loosely based on Maxon’s classic “808” circuit, the ST-9 Pro+ offers a dedicated midrange control that varies the amount of Midrange boost, creating powerful, fat and heavy distortion sounds akin to a full stack amplifier. A mode switch to select from two different diode types allows the user to fine-tune the ST-9 Pro+ for use with single coils or humbuckers, while switchable 9- or 18-volt operation provides increased dynamic headroom and fuller frequency response.

Check out the Godlyke website for audio samples and a demo video.

SM-9 Pro+ Super Metal
Based on the cult-classic Super Metal pedal from the 1980′s, the new Maxon SM-9 Pro+ packs sufficient firepower to accurately reproduce all the tonal evolutions of metal music over the past 30 years.

The SM-9 Pro+ can create an almost limitless variety of high-gain guitar sounds, from classic 70′s Plexi tones through the “scooped midrange” made famous by the 1980’s thrash pioneers, and on to the huge low-end needed for the extended tunings of today’s extreme metal.

The SM-9 Pro+ also features switchable 9 or 18 volt operation, providing sufficient heardroom with minimal compression to handle today’s high-output pickups and active electronics.

Again, there are sound samples on the Godlyke website.

Here’s a chance to win one of the most pimped-out custom guitars I’ve seen in a while. Relentless Energy is giving away a Gibson SG that Gibson designer Sam Walker called “the most heavily customized guitar I’ve done in ten years.” No idea what the value is, but I’m sure it’s worth a pretty penny.

I’ve been posting giveaways for a while now, and this is one of the coolest guitars I’ve seen given away. Oftentimes companies will just team up with Gibson and buy a cheap Epiphone and slap their logo on it, but this one took some time, thought, and cash to pull off!

Some info from Relentless:

Based on the Gibson SG Special, the SG Relentless has a body composed of rich mahogany curves. The fingerboard has been replaced by a piece of AA Ebony with 22 stainless steel frets. It boasts hand-cut Mother of Pearl inlays, rich, multi-layered graphics finished in clear lacquer and buffed to a high gloss, a photo-etched stainless steel scratch plate, Gibson 496R and 500T pickups and a custom selector switch to flick between two settings — Grind and Sacrifice.

Donate $50 to Team Josie, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, and have a chance to win a $5,000 Custom Jason Z. Schroeder Guitar.

For those of you on the Vintage Guitar email list, today you received this very touching email from Alan Greenwood, the magazine’s Publisher:

Please forward this to all your guitar-loving friends.

On April 9, 2007, Josie Alise Greenwood, my 3-year-old grand niece, died of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. As you may imagine, it was devastating to her family. They formed Team Josie, which participates in the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life and to date have raised nearly $13,000 for the Society. This year, Team Josie is raffling a custom guitar being graciously donated by luthier Jason Schroeder, of Jason Z. Schroeder Guitars, Redding, California. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

I figure I can do one better than just forward the email to my friends, I can send it out to thousands of caring musicians.

Aside from the great cause, this guitar looks AMAZING! If you’re not familiar with Schroeder guitars, do yourself a favor and check out his website. For a $50 donation, your name gets thrown in the drawing to win this fine axe. There are also some great photos on the Team Josie website of the guitar in various stages of production.

To learn more about this cause, the guitar, or to make a donation, please visit josieshope.org.

Also, please help spread the word. At the bottom of this post are a bunch of “Share” buttons. Share this on Facebook, Tweet about it. Email it to your friends. Help support Alan and Team Josie.

Sticks break. Sticks are expensive. If you play a lot of drums, this adds up to a nice chunk of change.

What if I told you that you could buy a pair of drum sticks that will last 8-10 times that of a normal stick and only costs about twice the price? Do I sound like a used car salesman??? The car salesman wouldn’t give you chance to win the car for free, though, would he?

Today I’m excited to launch a GearPipe exclusive giveaway just for the drummers. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be giving away two sets of Duratech drum sticks each day. Duratech sticks are not your father’s Pro Marks! These non-wood drum sticks are made of a secret nylon polymer blend which resists chipping, fraying, and breaking. Like the loud, cutting sound of a nylon tip? Try an entire nylon stick!

By avoiding wood, Players Music, the makers of Duratech, can keep these sticks more consistent than other sticks on the market. They are are carefully balanced and pitch matched, guaranteed straight + or – .005 of an inch and weight is guaranteed within 1/10 of an ounce, pair after pair.

So…what do you have to do to win? We want to get a pair of these sticks in your hands, but we also want to know what you, as a drummer, think about Duratech and drum sticks in general. Just fill out the short survey below and hit submit. You’ll be entered to win! I’ll be announcing the winners each day on my Facebook Page, so if you’re not already a fan, come check it out.

If you want to learn more about Duratech sticks, you can listen to a podcast interview I did with Tony LaLonde, the man who developed the sticks, or check out the brand-spanking new Duratech Facebook Page.

I would love to have this mic. ProAudio.com is giving away a Shure KSM44/SL Large Single-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone worth $799. All you have to do is sign up for their email list. You would be a much better singer and your guitar would sound awesome through this mic.

About the Shure KSM44/SL:

The KSM44/SL is a multiple pattern (cardioid, omnidirectional, bidirectional), externally biased, dual large diaphragm condenser microphone with extremely low self-noise (7dB). Developed to meet the needs of studio recording musicians, the warm, rich sound of the KSM44 delivers exceptional performance, tailored to deliver vivid reproduction of voice for the most critical recordings. The KSM44 also offers great flexibility in a variety of recording applications, working well on acoustic and amplified instruments, as its capacity for managing high SPLs accommodates loud sound sources such as drums and guitar amplifiers.

Line6 obviously thinks a lot of their Relay Digital Wireless Systems and wants a lot of people to try them out.

Line6 obviously thinks a lot of their Relay Digital Wireless Systems and wants a lot of people to try them out.

This morning I got an email from Brian at Fretbase who let me know they’re giving one of these systems away to one of their readers. Cool…I posted a link on Twitter and Facebook, letting everyone I know who would care about this contest that this unit is up for grabs. Now, I’m telling you. Head to the Fretbase contest page to enter to win one of these wireless systems that sell for $299.

BUT THEN…I realize that Line6 is spreading these things around like candy! If you really want to bolster your chances of winning, you can also head over to I Heart Guitar, The Tone King, Dolphinstreet, and Gear-Vault. There are probably more. If you find another, leave a link in the comments.
